Appearance
E-mail and Newsgroup messages are often responded to by using the Reply feature. Messages which are replys will show the text (or quote) of the message originator followed by the response text. The quote text may be set to: (1) Plain, (2) Bold, (3) Italic or (4) Bold and Italic. The size of the quoted text may be set to: (1) plain, (2) smaller, (3) larger. Adjusting these settings can make E-mail and newsgroup messages easier to read. |

Composition
Copies of sent messages (both E-mail and Newsgroup) may be sent to the user or to another E-mail address. If the user box is checked, all future messages sent will also be sent to the user. If a E-mail address is entered into the text-entry rectange, all future messages sent will also be sent to the address. It is possible to send copies to the user and another address. Sent messages by the user may be saved as a file. If the box is checked, outgoing messages will be saved as a file. The default path is "Preferences/Netscape/Mail/Sent Mail" for E-mail messages. The default path is "Preferences/Netscape/Mail/Posted Articles" for Newsgroup messages. Checking the last square will add the recieved message text (printed in the reply as a quote) to all outgoing replys sent by the user. Adding the quote helps the reader understand about what the user is commenting. |

Servers
Outgoing Mail Server and incoming mail Server setting will almost always be identical. Enter the server name in each text rectangle. The E-mail address "rswenner@students.uiuc.edu" would use "students.uiuc.edu" for both settings. The alias of the address (uiuc.edu) will result in an error. The full server address must be used. The POP user ID for "rswenner@students.uiuc.edu" would be "rswenner."
The default path for stored mail files (on a Macintosh) is /System Folder/Preferences/Netscape/Mail. Users may change this using the Browse button. The file sizes is E-mail messages can be screened. The default is none (no limit). Users may set the linit for the maximum file size which can be downloaded. If set a 10K, mail messages 11K and over will not be downloaded completely. Only the first 10K of the message will be transmitted. E-mail messages may be kept on the server and merely copied to the user harddrive or taken off the server and copied to the user harddrive. There are advantages for both settings. users will have to decide which is the more suitable. Netscape can check for E-mail at regular time intervals or only check when the user requests it. Times may range from every minute to greater durations. Ten minutes is the default setting.
The News Server setting informs Netscape which server to use. The News server should be set to "news.cso.uiuc.edu" for University of Illinois faculty and student users. |

Netscape can be set to remember your E-mail server password. This feature has pros and cons. If the computer is used by a single user and is secure, this feature can and should be used. if the computer is used by many users, the feature should not be activated. Netscape can organize the listings of E-mail and Newsgroup messages. Messages will follow a top-down format with newer messages appearing at the bottom of the list. However, the method known as threading can be employed to place replys next to the original message. Threading often helps users see the context and flow of discussions better.
