Introduction

Profitable soybean production systems for the U.S. farmers and competitive advantage for U.S. soybean marketing depend on producers' abilities to integrate the best management practices and best available technology into management systems that are agronomically sound, efficient in use of physical, economic, and management resources, and environmentally responsible. To meet these criteria, the management must be intensive- paying careful attention to the details. Each practice, each input should be carefully evaluated for its effect on production, efficiency, profitability, and environmental concerns.

U.S. soybean producers are increasingly involved in a world-wide market...one that employs increasing sophistication in production procedures. Our main competition will be quick to adopt the new technology that is being developed to adapt production management and inputs to the variation that exists in fields. Management of variability is being demonstrated as a tool which can improve crop production efficiency, but the adoption is just beginning. However, more information is needed in the development of intensive management systems for soybean production with the overall goal of maintaining the position of U.S. producers in meeting world needs.
